As described in the previous update, media people / bloggers around the US were sent metal boxes with information in that led to the Legends of Alcatraz website.
SG_Tess let us know about one other site reporting the receipt of a box and that has led to a couple of other sites being found as well as the BadAssDigest.com site reported previously.
WikiBruce.com
ComingSoon.net
MovieWeb.com
Also the AlcatrazLegends Twitter account is also starting to post pictures of the material.
The boxes that were sent out to the other sites contained the same information and objects apart from one thing.
These pictures were taken from the sites above and collated into these versions by me.
The postcards all have the same handwritten text on the back (although seemingly different handwriting), but the actual postcards are different types. The images are different and the information on the back is different.
The main thing for me that stands out from the information on the back is the dates of each card.
1910 - From MovieWeb.com, BadAssDigest.com, Collider.Com, SlashFilm and Mustang Magazine
1936 - From AlcatrazLegends Twitter and WikiBruce.com
1957 - From ComingSoon.net and GeekTyrant (video)
One thing that was common amongst the boxes was this lenticular card (image from WikiBruce.com).
It shows one scene from 1960 and one from today, actually 2008, which was when the card was published.
When all the other material was the same in the boxes, these postcards stick out and are asking to be investigated, or at the very least noting and remembering for future use.
So we now have these years to consider 1910, 1936, 1957, 1960, 2008 (plus 1963 and 2012 of course !)
As always your thoughts and theories are welcome in the comments section and if you know of any other people with different post cards then let us know.
first ? How neat, I'm so excited playing along with my friends again !
ReplyDeleteHello everyone.
ReplyDeleteHi Lisa
ReplyDeleteI don't even know if this is part of the puzzle, but it did stand out so I thought I ought to point it out.
I think the dates on the postcard by Susie are more likely to be the significant ones.
I think the lenticular card is more than likely to emphasise the here one moment, gone the next theme.
Hi Tess, you weren't there when I started typing that comment and I got distracted half way through !
ReplyDeleteMaybe those dates will refer to significant moments in some inmates lives?
ReplyDeleteZort: You're always on top of things!
Great to see some of the old familiar faces here!
ReplyDeleteI've searched high and low for higher res versions of the backs of the postcards. I'm particularly interested in the back of the lenticular postcard. There is a barcode on the back that I really want to scan and see if anything interesting comes up. It is probably just the UPC code... but you never know... :-)
Has anyone found a high res version of that one? If so, could you please post the URL? Thanks!
Did Jo get one of those kits?
ReplyDeleteJT: I don't think Jo did. I'll ask her.
ReplyDeletePat,
ReplyDeleteI'm assuming you mean the one on the Cellblock postcard which is in place of stamp. My readers says "no barcode detected" so maybe just the numbers 80898 00226 needs to be filed away for now.
Lotto
Jo did not get a kit. :(
ReplyDeleteNew picture (known) posted on Twitter @AlcatrazLegends. Just noting that whoever made the sign board that day couldn't find a lower case "z" that day.
ReplyDeleteA______Z
Jo's blog post should be read. ;)
We'll hope that no one here wide up in the pen for megauploading..... ha ha
Lotto
Well,heck- they should have given Jo one-she really has spread the word!
ReplyDeleteVideo from Geek Tyrant of the box contents Geek Tyrant Video (via SG_Tess)
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't show the front of the postcard, but it does look like the 1957 version.
The new image on Alcatraz Legends is the one from the box and one I've been seeing ever since Comic Con.
Yes the signboard looks odd with the big A and big Z, perhaps the guards wanted to make a statement !
Regarding the postcard barcode, the largest size I can find is on WikiBruce
ReplyDeleteHowever I still can't manage to scan it.
I've found another 1910 version at Collider.Com
ReplyDeleteFirstShowing.net sldo got one, but no pictures and SlashFilm got one.
ReplyDeleteThe barcode on the Collider.com picture is the clearest one I've seen but I still can't get a scan from it, either on my phone or by using an online service.
sldo = also !
ReplyDeleteLA Times got one, but no picture of the postcard.
ReplyDeleteThanks Zort for that link to Collider. You are right, that image is plenty high res enough to get a good scan of that barcode... but like you... nothing I've tried will read it. It's possible that it is some proprietary format just for the National Park Service (for inventory I would guess). Of course, it could also be a hint that it is relevant, since it is not any sort of standard barcode. Ah, the frustrations of ARGs, right? LOL!
ReplyDeleteFor anyone who wants to take a look at the high quality version of the lenticular postcard and barcode, you can take a look here:
Postcard Barcode
Oh-well that whole discussion on the card about how the cells open- and the KEYS- is interesting. I think they wouldn't have had to ask Jack about an regular Alcatraz key though.
ReplyDeleteAnd- to get sidetracked- we have our own Alcatraz of the East over here. I have taken this river cruise past the Portsmouth Naval Prison- Navy Prison
ReplyDeleteThe youtube video explained for me the flower being in the box. The flower wasn't making much since to me.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know what type of flower it is ?
ReplyDeletesomeone said it's a chrysanthemum but I can't remember who
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteTrying again-Alcatraz gardens:
ReplyDeletegardens
This is interesting- the flower as a symbol of hope of escape from Alcatraz-
ReplyDeleteEscape
I wonder if there will be any mention of the film in the show at some point.
ReplyDeleteIt seems inevitable somehow :-)
OO- Latest tweet says Legend will begin in San Fran on Jan 27. Jo- are you there?
ReplyDeleteI think that ties in with the info given when the puzzle is solved, it seems there will be something going on on the three days that weekend.
ReplyDeleteThe EBTiller Twitter account just posted a couple of updates -
"Oh the things I've just seen. And the things . . . I've just done."
and
"@freirejuanma O . . . solo usted espere."
Which I think translates to "O . . . Just You Wait."
Not sure what the twitter user @freirejuanma has to do with things as I can't see a direct connection.
Which does actually beg the question who is posting as EB Tiller now he is dead !
ReplyDeleteHere's a tweet from @freirejuanma from Jan 18th :Por cierto, Jason Butler Harner está tan creepy como en "El intercambio". #Alcatraz
ReplyDeleteMy translation is: Jason Butler Harner is as creepy as in "The Changeling".
So Harner is Tiller and Changling was a movie he was in. I think EB is responding to that tweet. Guess he can still show up in flashbacks-but yep, he seems to be tweeting from beyond!
Can't anyone create a twitter account using EB Tiller's name?
ReplyDeleteJo says on her @InsideAlcatraz that @EBTiller is an official account - so I guess should would have gotten that from "inside" ! lol
ReplyDeleteI've seen that 5.0 Mustang Magazine has had the box of Alcatraz stuff.
ReplyDelete(Link on main blog post)
The postcard is the 1910 version, at least the picture is anyway.
No new info from AlcatrazLegends twitter today.
By the way has anyone any info on the store referenced in the Doc Soto blog
ReplyDeletevisitgeneralstore.com
Maybe someone will need to go there this weekend to find some info or a clue. There's an address and phone number on the site.
ReplyDeleteThere is another post up on Doc Soto's blog
ReplyDeleteIt is a link for a book finding site where you put in some text and it finds the book.
Could be useful at some stage.
I'm just trying to download the new episode at the moment so hope it's a good one.
After last night's episode I wonder of all were going to get from this viral is nods to the episodes? Seems like we got the white flower from the box last night.
ReplyDeleteI hope I'm wrong and it's more than that.
Yes, I'm watching now and it does explain the flower in the box.
ReplyDeleteI think there are elements in the box for the viral, but most of the items will be just promo for the series.
It may be that just the original URL was the viral vlue.
or even clue
ReplyDeleteOne final word after watching that episode : HATCH !
ReplyDeleteFitting that it was the 42nd comment :-)
ReplyDeleteI sent an email to Diego's Soul Patch and asked if the blog has to do with an ARG. Maybe today they will have the new podcast up.
ReplyDeleteJust noticed this update from the EB Tiller Twitter -
ReplyDelete(Sigh) . . . time for a soiree. Invitation to come soon.
I wonder if that is an episode reference or a viral hint ?
That's what I wondered based on the montage at the end of the 2 hour premier it could be either.
ReplyDeleteRebecca is a rubbish cop.
ReplyDeleteDiego's Soul Patch podcast is up on their site.
ReplyDeleteNot sure this is a real ARG or not yet...maybe just viral hints re next episode?
No reply about an ARG from Jorge in the podcast :(
ReplyDeleteSomething should be happening this weekend though- according to the Legends website. Probably the Tiller tweet refers to that.
There is another Doc Soto post today.
ReplyDeleteIt points to an old article from last year about Domino's putting a branch on the moon, which I would have sworn was an April Fool article if the date of the article wasn't September 1st !
New information on Legends site about weekend event! Looks like it is an event on the island- so San Fran folks- lucky you!
ReplyDeleteLucky San Fran people! It's going to be tough to be the first 302 in line especially not knowing where and when to be until Friday.
ReplyDeleteSo, it looks like the Legends event is Friday night- and according to the Docs Comics site there is a real Civil War reenactment taking place Sat/Sun.
ReplyDeleteWould it be at 9:14pm according to the clue from the puzzle? Sounds like it will be fun. I wonder if Jorge will be there?
ReplyDeleteHey Zort - Steve and I did an awsome Shout Out of the Blog at about the 20 minute mark in our first podcast episode.. Check it out... http://alcatrazpod.tumblr.com/post/16515831176/hosts-david-a-dein-and-steve-the-goog-guglich
ReplyDeleteThanks for the info
ReplyDeleteNEW POST !
I love puzzles like this. Did Doritos:The Quest a few years ago and made it all the way through(#812, got lots of help thank goodness). Didn't get to do the one for the Third Pirates Of The Carribean movie though!
ReplyDeleteI'd like to think playing Myst helps with puzzles like this.
