Dearly Departed: The two grids have letters that match on either grid. For instance, column 4/row 1 - A is the same on both grids. Is that enough to get you started?
I meant to pop in here earlier, but it's been a pretty busy week. I see the Blogger comments have mutated a bit again...black background, main post remains above comments and a there's a reply button (which doesn't work on my iPhone).
Between work, sick family and 2 amazing eps of Alcatraz last night, I've had very limited time to work on this round of puzzles. I got through 26-29 last night and then 30 at lunch today. The puzzles seem more straightforward now that I know to look for a hint in the puzzle title and blurb, and NOT to over think them.
Zort -- We seem to have the same tendency to over think these puzzles. When I first looked at Boxed In, just for a split second, I thought there might be a keyword or playfair cipher involved, but realized right away that it's an "easy" level puzzle and that there's no separate ciphertext. Actually, Boxed In is a variation route cipher that they made simpler by giving us the message before it's broken into ciphertext.
For Dearly Departed, "...ominous gloom weighing heavily OVER THEM..." made me think of an overlay right away, but I can totally see why you might think of a keyword, columnar transposition or even a four-square cipher.
BTW, the next LIVE EVENT will be at SXSW this weekend. @AlcatrazLegends tweeted about it last week and again last night, though it's easy to miss. I think they should tweet about these live events a little more often.

How are we doing ? I've got three of the answers so far
ReplyDeleteI've got Boxed In and Secret Decoder, but I seem to be having trouble with the rest. I'll see later today if I can get another one or two done.
ReplyDeleteYes, secret decoder is a logic puzzle where the answer changes each time it is loaded, but the password it gives is always the same.
ReplyDeleteIt took me a couple of attempts as I didn't think that there could be more than one of each letter in the password.
after answering Note to Self and Boxed In I see that I've reached 1000 points required? Anyone else.
ReplyDeleteHi, I've answered three of them so far and have reached 1160 points.
ReplyDeleteSpoke too soon 4 done and 1310 points now
ReplyDeleteWorking during lunch break - done first 4, 1350 points...working on 5th now.

DeleteYou should have 18 letters and it's a person - see previous puzzle if you're still stumped.
ReplyDeletei tried that many times today it's only 16 letters i have 2 left over...
Deleteomg i'm so silly....thanks i got it!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the hints, as usual I was trying to be too complicated and tried using a transposition cipher solver.
ReplyDeleteThe answer you are after can be got by ananagraming the letters, but another clue is - 1 2
Ok, I've created a solutions post, but as usual I'll leave it until tomorrow to be published to give people a chance to solve the puzzles themselves.
ReplyDeleteI wonder what the third phase of the competition will be.
Another live event somewhere lots of people can attend I hope.
Do you go to the live events?
DeleteI just found out about the whole thing on Hulu a couple days ago.
Hi everyone!

One more little hint for Puzzle 30 Poison Pen:
ReplyDeleteFrom the blurb:
"This letter spelled the BEGINNING of the END for Jasper."
From the letter:
"p.s. To make sense of my ramblings, take note of where my words END and BEGIN to see that I am actually quite direct."
Look at places where certain words end and the next begin.
I've added a NEW POST with the LoA details, thanks for letting us know.
ReplyDeleteWhere is SXSW it's out west isn't it?
